Migration of storks

| This artpiece was shown at Istanbul biennale 2005 at the workshop ”Lost in translation”.
My installation was about migration. During the biennale over a quarter million Storks fly in clouds over the Istanbul in the course of a few week. See text below. I showed both and installation and an artpiece for Internet that you could download. Birds have taken advantage of Turkey’s and Istanbul’s strategic position as a bridge connecting Europe to Asia and Africa for thousands of years In spring migratory birds fly northwards from Africa to Asia and Europe, and in autumn they leave their breading grounds to fly south to Africa again. However, the most spectacular migration in the world is the flight of storks down the Bosphourus in Istanbul in spring and autumn. Over a quarter million Storks fly in clouds over the city in the course of a few weeks. In autumn the peak passage time is in the second half of September. So when the Storks peak passage time is when the 9th Istanbul Biennale starts. It was an interactive work. I wanted people to climb up a ladder to an open window and with the binocular look at the Storks. There was window at east the same direction where the Storks cross Bosphourus. I wanted the migration of the storks to be a symbol over the situation in Istanbul and its position as a natural bridge connecting Europe to Asia and Africa. I also created a font/character with symbols from Istanbul above. The symbols are lakes, buildings, roads from Is¬tanbul. So when you type a letter with this font you will create symbols from Istanbul from the view of the Storks migration route over Istanbul. The character became a pattern and pictures. You can download the character and pictures below. |
